Introduction and welcome
from the Head of School
I am delighted to welcome you to the website for the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, University of Glasgow. In 2005 the former Department of Geography and Geomatics and Division of Earth Sciences merged to create the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences.
The School is in the College of Science and Engineering. Research activity in the School is managed by a Research Committee, which is joint with the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) based in East Kilbride. School research is organised through two research groups - the Earth Systems Group, and Human Geography – within each of which there are numerous separate research strands, and between which there is interaction and co-operation. Teaching in the School is overseen by the School Learning and Teaching Committee. We currently offer two Single Honours undergraduate degree programmes: Geography and Earth Science, and many Joint Honours combinations in the Arts, Science and Social Sciences. We also offer several taught postgraduate masters programmes: MRes in Human Geography, an MSc in Geospatial & Mapping Sciences an MSc in Geoinformation Technology & Cartography, MSc in Science for International Development and a suite of MSc programmes in Aquatic Systems Science. Postgraduate research is conducted in many areas of Geographical and Earth Science, commensurate with staff research interests.
I hope that you will be able to navigate the School website with ease, and will be able to find everything that you need. I hope too that it will give an accurate reflection of the School's vibrancy and readiness to grasp the importance of Geography and Earth Science in addressing contemporary agendas.
