Postgraduate research degrees
Postgraduate studies within the Department of Geographical and Earth Sciences are closely linked to the overall research activities of the academic staff staff and focus on the interfaces between Earth processes, Earth measurement and human geography. Many of our PhD students are co-supervised by staff in the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) our partner in the Centre for Geosciences (CfG).
On joining the Graduate School, research students attend a series of training courses organised both within the department and, for Earth Science and Physical Geography students, by the Physical Sciences Graduate School. These concentrate on the general skills of research, computing, library use, oral communication, safety and first aid. Human Geographers take the Social Sciences Graduate School's courses in the philosophy of the social sciences, qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as the Scottish Doctoral Programme run in association with other Scottish Universities.
The Department provides training in demonstrating and tutoring in undergraduate laboratory, tutorial and field classes, and in the specific techniques required for each students research project. Each research student has two or more supervisors to guide them through their research programme. Importantly, the Graduate School encourages a friendly atmosphere and the free and frank exchange of ideas between its members and with other researchers and technical staff.
