Undergraduate degree in Earth Science

Earth Science, which has grown from the original science of Geology, is the study of our entire planet, its history and evolution, its natural processes and the way it will change in the future. The Earth is a dynamic planet, so Earth Science is a living, expanding subject, covering so many different fields that Earth Scientists are among the most widely educated scientists of all.

Find an outline of the Earth Science degree here and the more detailed programme specifications of the Earth Science degree here.

The aims of the degree are:

· To understand the planet and the way it works, its properties and materials, its chemistry and physics, its life forms and their evolution, and its surface and internal processes.

· To understand the interaction of the planet and its inhabitants. Earth Science recognises that everything and everyone on the planet is affected by its natural processes and by the way humanity uses and exploits its natural resources. Our demands on the Earth and our uses of its raw materials produce practical and environmental problems that the degree course trains our students to understand and solve.

Earth Science is studied as a Single Honours degree that is intensely vocational and provides a thoroughly professional education that qualifies our graduates for entry into all areas of Earth Science employment. Our degree course will:

· Bring you the latest Earth Science knowledge and technology including a wide range of IT skills.

· Train you in research techniques and high-level fieldwork skills.

· Develop and encourage your problem-solving, learning and teamwork skills. Expand and perfect your presentational, written and verbal communication skills.

Earth Science can be taken as a Single Honours 4-year degree, or as a 3-year Designated degree. Students taking either of these degrees must study Earth Science 1 and Earth Science 2, together with first year and second year choices of modules normally from science subjects (including Geography). No prior knowledge of Earth Science is required for those starting the subject. Earth Science may also be taken as a Combined Honours degree with Archaeology and with Chemistry (Environmental Biogeochemistry).
