Welcome to new applicants
I am delighted that you are considering applying to study in the Department of Geographical and Earth Sciences. I hope that you will find your experience in the Department to be stimulating, enjoyable and successful, regardless of whether you are undertaking one, two, three or four years of study with us.
You are cordially invited to visit the Department on Open Day or Applicants Day, details of these events are posted on the University and Department www site. In addition the Department sends out periodic Newsletters by email, highlighting recent developments, news, and also providing information on our degrees, our field courses, downloadable posters, and other items of direct relevance to anyone interested in Earth Science and Geography (sign up here to receive the Newsletter).
This is an exciting time for the Department which was formed in summer 2005 by the merger of the former Department of Geography & Geomatics with the Division of Earth Sciences. We have two Single Honours undergraduate degree programmes, Geography and Earth Science, and many Joint Honours combinations in the Arts, Science and Social Sciences Faculties. We are continually re-shaping our courses to keep them up-to-date with advancing knowledge and are increasingly using new technologies to enhance our teaching. The Department is housed in the East Quadrangle of the Main Building of the University, and in the Gregory Building, so expect to find your classes being taught at both sites.
The Department has a long-standing track-record of producing graduates who find employment in a wide-range of sectors, and who leave Glasgow with fond memories of their time here. Indeed, in the 2006 National Student Survey the Department attained the highest satisfaction scores in Glasgow University and was within the top five comparable Departments across the UK. By choosing to study with us, you will be entering a Department with a strong research base, with internationally-leading work being conducted within the fields of Human Geography and Earth Surface Dynamics. As a result of research initiatives, several new staff will be coming to join us over the next year and these staff will be contributing fully to our teaching programmes.
We welcome enquiries from applicants (contact Gordon Curry, details below), and invite you to browse our web site for further information.
Finally, it remains for me to thank you once again for your application to study in the Department. Good luck with your University careers.
Professor Trevor B. Hoey
Head of Department
