Summary of research Debating the Contemporary Museum.
My research considers theoretical aspects of urban change, at the same time grounding studies within a policy framework from a governmental perspective. The concepts of cultural-urban regeneration, citizenship and social inclusion are central themes to my inquiries. One such arena that encompasses all three concepts is that of the public museum and therefore forms the institutional and empirical setting for my research. My research will specifically focus upon the work of Glasgow Museums.
My research intends to investigate the role of the museum in contemporary Glasgow by considering how the (local) state has sought to develop its museums to meet the ambitions of social inclusion and justice and the wider project of citizenship. Further to this I plan to develop an understanding as to how museum management then gives expression to such policy objectives, leading on to consider how such issues then relate to the dominant goals of the local state in terms of urban regeneration and the enhancement of the city’s competitive position. The final section of my research will then go on to consider how current museum users ‘read’ the museum and secondly how non-museum users relate to the institution of the museum.
