Research title

Ultrastructure and crystallography of Abalone shells.

Summary of research

My research work is using SEM-EBSD to explore the ultra microstructure and crystallographic orientation of nacre layer in five species abalone (h. asinina, h. laevigata, h. rubra, h. varia and h. rubra) and infill of closed apertures. These shells were collected from the coast of Australia. Abalone as an important model of investigation biological structures for material science, one side I will focus on the evolution of morphology and crystallographic orientation of crystals during the shell growth; the other side I will concentrate on the cohesive property of infill with the closed apertures. My research objection is to obtain the micro-architecture information from micro/nano- scale and be able to advance the improvement of biomimetic material with excellent properties of strength and toughness.
