Research title

The impact of climate change on weathering in urban environments: Prediction and mitigation..

Summary of research

Changes to the U.K. climate are likely to enhance rates of rock weathering with important implacations for landscape evolution, soil development and water quality. The Impact of climate change will also be felt in the urban environment with accelerated dacay of sandstone buildings and this is a prority research area for Historic Scotland. This project aims to elucidate the mechanisms and quantify the rates of sandstone weathering at the present day and in the recent past, and to predict how these processes may change with the climate. Results will be used to evaulate the effectiveness of strategies for preserving weathered stone and slow down future rates of decay. The research is cross-disciplinary but address these problems from a mineralogical, geochemical and microbiological perspective.
