Research title

Knickpoint retreat on the Isle of Jura.

Summary of research

The melting of the British Ice Sheet (~16 000 yr B.P.) caused dramatic changes in landscape dynamics. In the Isle of Jura (west coast of Scotland), the glacio-isostatic rebound generated a drop of ~40 m in rivers base-level. The drop of the base-level triggered several knickpoints in the fluvial system which are propagating over bedrock channels in a relative an homogeneous lithology (quartzite).

The goals of my research are:

(1) To estimate the knickpoint retreat rate
(2) To calculate the rate of erosion of reaches in transience
(3) To assess changes in the morphology of bedrock reaches after the propagation of a knickpoint

The approach followed in my research uses the Stream Profile Analysis (SPA), Stream Power Model and Cosmogenic Dating Techniques (10Be) in order to unravel the effects caused by a knickpoint propation and its implication in landscape evolution.
