X-ray powder Diffraction (XRD)

The Division houses a Philips PW 1050/35 X-ray diffractometer that can be used to determine the mineralogical composition of powdered samples.

Philips PW 1050/35 X-ray diffractometer

The instrument uses a cobalt X-rays as standard although a copper tube is also available. Powder patterns are acquired using a vertical goniometer and computer-controlled step scanner.

Data are processed and presented using computer graphics (Traces V4.0) and a comprehensive CD-ROM database (JCPDS) is used to help identify the minerals.

Scans created in Traces V4.0

Debye-Scherrer cameras for powder photographs are also available.
