Biography Graduate of the universities of Newcastle upon Tyne (BSc 1973, PhD 1990) and New Brunswick (MEng 1977) in Geomatics. Photogrammetrist in production (Huntings Surveys, 1973-75) and research (university of New Brunswick, 1977-78), Digital cartographer in production and reserach (NERC Experimental Cartography Unit, 1978-1983), Lecturer/senior lecturer in geoinformatics (ITC Netherlands 1983-1992; Glasgow University 1995 to present)and as a Consultant (Bureau Projects and Consultancies ITC Netherlands 1983-1992; EuroConsult 1992-1995; and with small ongoing tasks). MRICS, MInstCES, FRGS. Research interests As one of a group of staff members with a dominant interest in Geomatics my research is directed towards improved GIS design, with emphasis on: database design and maintenance; integrating and maintaining data from traditional map, metric, non-metric and historic photographic, video, multispectral, and other remote systems; handling 3-D and dynamic data; and, representing the source and quality of data. I consider the last of these to be my core research area.
As collaboration is a key element of GIS research, with my colleagues I have built up relationships with academic researchers in projects related to coastal sedimentation and erosion and river catchment management, with public agencies in projects related to agricultural development, Land Registration, communal tenure and data protection and with commercial organisations in the area of data and information quality.
Current research The management of data and information quality in the GIS environment.
Integration of Digital Photogrammetry and GIS.
