Biography

2007-present - SAGES Post Doctoral Research Fellow
2006-2007 - Research Associate, Birckbeck College, University of London
2002-2007 - Ph.D. University of Glasgow
2001-2002 - USGS Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory

Research interests

  • Quantification of the rates of surface processes and long term landscape evolution
  • Understanding quantifying tectonic processes effecting the shallow crust, using low temperature thermochronology
  • Integration of low temperature thermochronology with other qualitative and quantitative techniques to describe landscape evolution on a range of timescales
  • Development of new analytical methods to expand the range of temporal and thermal constraints, and improve our understanding of crustal processes
  • The magnitudes, rates and relative importance of the interactions and feedbacks between mantle, crustal, surface and climate processes
  • Modelling of the thermal evolution of the crust with time, to constain the local- and regional-scale lithospheric response to magmatic, tectonic and climatic events
  • Current research

I am currently working on a number of projects including:

  • Using thrmochronology to constrain stress drop during palaeoseismic events
  • Improved understanding of annealing and diffusion behaviour in accessory minerals
  • Raman spectroscopy as a tool for fission track and (U-Th)/He analyses
  • Denudation on the European rifted margin and the temporal variation in sediment flux to the North Atlantic basins
  • The evolution of the Scottish landscape
  • Plume-lithospheric interaction in Large Igneous Provinces (Europe, Greenland, South Africa)
  • The evolution of rifted margins (Europe, Greenland, South Africa, Australia)

  • Palaeogene igneous centres of Rum and Eigg, Inner Hebrisdes

  • The development and application of laser extraction techniques for (U-Th)/He thermochronology
  • The development and application zircon (U-Th)/He thermochronometer

  • Cathodoluminescence images (SEM) of Fish
Canyon Tuff zircons. Scale bar is 50 microns

  • Exhumation and denudation in orogenic events (Alps and Himalaya
  • Combination of U-Pb and low temperature thermochronology to discriminate variable sediment inputs
  • Integration of radiometric dating (U-Pb, Ar-Ar) and low temperature thermochronology to constrain complete plutonic cooling histories
  • Other Responsibilities
