Biography

Place of origin: Lima, Peru.
BA Hons University of Nottingham 1967; PhD University of Liverpool 1973 (Thesis: Migration systems in Peru and their impacts).
I have worked as Research Fellow in the Centre for Latin American Studies, University of Liverpool, as Lecturer at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, as Visiting Lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, as Visiting Professor at CEPEIGE, The Pan American Centre for Geographical Research, in Quito, Ecuador and for a British Council link with the Universidad Mayor de San Andres and the Universidad Catolica in La Paz, Bolivia.
My research students' work have been set in Sudan, Iran, Jordan, Egypt, Brazil, Mexico, Italy and Scotland.

Research interests

1. My principal interest is in the evolution of cities in the Developing World and the implications for their varied social groups.
2. Another interest is in how world markets impinge on developing countries. I have pursued this through the case of the changing structure of the leather and footwear industries. The repercussions folowing market liberalisation made Mexico a particularly interesting case study.

Current research

a) I am collaborating with an Indonesian collegue in a study of young female rural migrants' choice of accommodation in Surabaya. Governments encourage MNCs to establish export oriented industries to boost employment but rarely concern themselves overmuch about the living conditions of the workers. However, the situation cannot be understood purely in economic terms. Indonesian culture is complex, its structure being far less rigid that either other Islamic or Confucian Chinese societies.
b) I am also analysing time series data collected for the neighbourhood of Gracia, Barcelona 1945-1975. These detailed data trace family evolution and neighbourhood reconstruction at a time of considerable fear and repression.
